Harris, Obama Trash Trump, MAGA, At Jesse Jackson Funeral

Harris, Obama Trash Trump, MAGA

The funeral services for civil rights icon Jesse Jackson on Friday became a flashpoint for political controversy as several high-profile Democratic figures utilized the occasion to critique the Trump administration, drawing a direct public reprimand from the late leader’s son.

Former Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton attended the service, alongside former Vice President Kamala Harris. During their remarks, Harris and Obama addressed the current political climate in terms that critics characterized as “trash talk” directed at President Donald Trump.

During her speech, Kamala Harris referenced the current administration’s actions, stating, “I predicted a lot of what’s happening right now… I’m not into saying ‘I told ya so,’ but we did see it comin’.” Observers noted that Harris, as well as Barack Obama during his turn at the lectern, appeared to adopt specific regional accents while delivering their remarks to the crowd.

The tone of the speeches was met with public disapproval from Jesse Jackson Jr., a former Democratic congressman from Illinois. Jackson Jr. urged attendees to prioritize the legacy of his father over partisan messaging.

“Do not bring your politics out of respect to Rev. Jesse Jackson and the life that he lived,” Jackson Jr. stated. “These ongoing services are welcome to ALL—Democrat, Republican, liberal, and conservative… because his life is broad enough to cover the full spectrum of what it means to be an American.”

While Hillary Clinton and Jill Biden were in attendance, Michelle Obama was notably absent from the services.

Amid the current tension over U.S. military actions, a 2011 video of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has resurfaced, highlighting what critics call a shifting standard on executive war powers.

In the 2011 clip, Pelosi defended then-President Obama’s decision to launch military strikes in Libya without congressional authorization, answering “Yes” when asked if the president could act without prior approval. However, following President Trump’s recent strikes against Iran, Pelosi has labeled the actions unconstitutional, citing the 1973 War Powers Act.

“The Constitution is clear: decisions that lead our nation into war must be authorized by Congress,” Pelosi wrote on X. Her spokesperson, Ian Krager, argued there is an “absolute distinction” between the “limited” Libya operations and the current “broad, escalating” hostilities with Iran.

The military action authorized by President Trump was a joint U.S.-Israeli operation targeting Iranian infrastructure and leadership. According to U.S. officials, the operation resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other high-ranking officials. The administration has defended the strikes as a preemptive necessity to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

While Pelosi and other Democrats have attempted to advance a War Powers resolution to curb further military action without explicit congressional consent, those efforts failed to pass this week. Historically, both Republican and Democratic administrations have viewed the War Powers Act as an unconstitutional infringement on the president’s role as commander-in-chief.
