White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Democrats “fell right into” a political trap set by President Donald Trump. She made the remarks after Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.
Leavitt explained that Democrats’ reactions exposed their views on immigration and public safety. She shared these comments during an interview on Fox News with host Sean Hannity.
According to Leavitt, Democratic lawmakers failed to stand when Trump honored victims of violent crimes. Therefore, she argued their actions revealed their priorities during the address.
She specifically mentioned the case of Iryna Zarutska. Leavitt said the victim’s neck was slit by a career criminal who had been jailed multiple times.
Leavitt also referenced the victim’s mother, Anna Zarutska. She said Democrats did not stand when Trump commended her during the speech.

During the speech, Trump honored several people connected to crime victims. However, most Democratic lawmakers in the House did not stand or applaud.
Trump recognized Anna Zarutska, whose daughter Iryna Zarutska was killed in a Charlotte rail stabbing. Additionally, he honored 7-year-old Dalilah Coleman.
Dalilah Coleman suffered severe injuries in a car accident. The crash involved an illegal immigrant driving an 18-wheel tractor-trailer.
Trump also honored Erika Kirk. She is the widow of his late friend and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.
Leavitt criticized Democrats’ response and called their actions “despicable.” However, she praised Trump’s decision to highlight the issue publicly.
She said Trump intentionally challenged lawmakers to stand if they prioritized American citizens over illegal immigrants. According to Leavitt, the move revealed lawmakers’ positions.

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) struggled to control his conference during the speech. The address created several tense moments inside the chamber.
Before the event, Jeffries instructed members to remain in “silent defiance” or skip the speech. However, many Democrats reacted openly once Trump began speaking.
Representative Al Green (D-TX) was removed from the chamber early in the address. He held a sign that read, “Black people aren’t apes!”
The sign responded to a widely condemned video posted on Truth Social. The video depicted the Obamas as monkeys.
It is important to note that Trump and his team did not edit or create the video. Meanwhile, the moment echoed a confrontation from the previous year.
During that earlier incident, Green waved a cane during a dispute with Trump. As before, Trump ignored the interruption.

Several Democratic lawmakers also walked out during the speech. Representatives Lauren Underwood (D-IL), Bill Foster (D-IL), and Madeline Dean (D-PA) left the chamber midway.
Trump drew the strongest reaction when he asked lawmakers to stand. He asked whether American citizens should be prioritized over illegal immigrants.
Many Democrats remained seated. Trump responded sharply during the address.
“You should be ashamed of yourself for not standing up,” Trump said.
The moment triggered strong reactions from Representatives Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN). They accused Trump of responsibility for the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
Both victims were U.S. citizens shot by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis earlier this year.
